PESHAWAR, September 15 (Online): Chairman, Qaumi Watan Party (QWP), Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao on Sunday welcomed the release of the kidnapped workers of Gomal Zam Dam project and asked the government to make efforts to secure the release of Ajmal Khan, vice chancellor of Islamia College University.

In a statement, he said the release of the kidnapped workers would benefit the peace process, urging the government to use this opportunity to restore peace in the country particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“The government should also show seriousness and implement the declaration of the recently held All Parties Conference in letter and spirit to pave the way for establishing sustainable peace,” he maintained.

He said Ajmal Khan had been in captivity for three years and the government should make efforts to get him released as he had gone through great difficulty.

Aftab Sherpao said time was ripe for peace talks as the soil of the Pakhtuns witnessed a lot of bloodshed over the last several years.

The QWP leader hailed the start of the return of the IDPs hailing from Tirah valley in Khyber Agency and said the government should provide all necessary facilities to the returning families to facilitate them.

He welcomed the phase-wise withdrawal of the Pakistan Army troops from Malakand Division from the next month and said the capacity of civil administration and law-enforcing agencies should be enhanced so that the law and order could be maintained there.

“Peace was restored in Swat valley as a result of unprecedented sacrifices rendered by the security forces and the masses. Around 2.5 million people were displaced when military operation was launched to flush out the militants,” he recalled.

He said his party was committed to working for bringing peace and prosperity to the land of the Pakhtuns to remove the sense of deprivation among them.
