SHC takes notice over shortage of medicine, food in Thar

KARACHI, March 18 (Online): Sindh High Court, Tuesday, took notice of shortage of medicine and food items in drought-hit areas of Sindh.
A two member bench of the court headed by Chief Justice of SHC Justice Maqbool Baqar was hearing the suo motu notices regarding famine in Tharparkar.
The court has sought report regarding procedure for provision of food assistance, progress and constituency of Fact Finding Committee.
The report of Sessions Judge Mithi was presented before the court in which it was stated that most of the Thar famine-hit areas are deprived from assistance and till now 80,000 families are looking for aid.
It further says there is shortage of medicine and absence of doctors in government hospitals is still a matter of routine. According to the inquiry report, the officials of Revenue and Relief Department are responsible of the current situation in Thar.
During hearing, Secretary Health Iqbal Durrani apprised that relief efforts underway in 20 of 40 Union Councils of drought affected areas with the help of international donor agencies.
The Secretary Health admitted that the child casualties occurred due to lack of protein in food items.
Later, the court adjourned the hearing of appeals till 27th March.
